Gary D. Hoefling started working for John Deere in August of 1980 and by 1981 he was working exclusively on four-wheel drive tractors and major engine repairs. Since then he has been trained extensively on John Deere engines in both two- and four-wheel drive tractors.

The Motor Works was started in 1993. The Motor Works was started as part of a northwest Iowa John Deere dealership, specializing in complete drop-in replacement and repowering for engines. In 2002, The Motor Works was moved to Spencer Iowa. The Motor Works is the fastest growing John Deere businesses in Iowa.
